One damaging post can snowball into a full-blown brand crisis in hours — and a startup called Gudea just raised $7M to stop that happening. Pitched at TechCrunch Disrupt’s Startup Battlefield this week, its AI tracks how stories and rumours move across more than 500 platforms to warn companies before trouble erupts, not after.
Gudea describes itself as the “storm tracker for the internet.” Where traditional social-listening tools tally mentions, hashtags and impressions, Gudea’s AI analyses who is driving a conversation, how information travels between people and platforms, how quickly a story is gaining traction, and where it could be headed — across X, Reddit, TikTok and hundreds of other mainstream and fringe sites.
The company has an unusual backstory. CEO and founder Keith Presley spent 15 years in political campaigns and defence work, including building infrastructure for Andrew Yang’s presidential campaign. The team started as the George Washington Initiative, a nonprofit set up after the 2020 US election that adapted intelligence-community tactics used against overseas extremist networks to disrupt domestic information campaigns. When they realised no existing tool showed how information was actually moving, they founded Gudea in 2023.
Three years on, the company says it has nearly 40 clients — including a Fortune 50 telecoms company, a Fortune 50 retailer, PR and crisis-communications agencies, government agencies, and, intriguingly, “one of the world’s largest AI labs” and “one of the world’s largest bands.”
The urgency is real. Presley says that in 2021, roughly 1 in 4 situations they examined involved inauthentic activity. Today it’s about 9 in 10 — generative AI has made it cheap for a single person with a laptop to run what once required an organisation.
The new funding — $7M in seed money co-led by Mudita Venture Partners and Silicon Road Ventures, bringing the total to around $15M — will fund expansion, including narrative geolocation (pinpointing where conversations happen, eventually to city-block precision) and a feature that lets companies test ad campaigns through the AI before launch to spot likely backlash.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth in Gudea’s pitch: if 9 in 10 online situations now involve some inauthentic activity, small businesses are operating in the same polluted information environment as the Fortune 50 — they just don’t have a crisis team.
You don’t need Gudea’s software to act on this. The basics cost nothing: Google Alerts on your business name and key people, a weekly check of review sites and social mentions, and — most importantly — a one-page plan for how you’d respond if a false claim about your business started spreading. Speed of response is what separates a bad day from a brand crisis.
It’s also worth remembering that AI cuts both ways on reputation. Just this week we’ve seen AI agents deployed to fight scams (see our coverage of Apate) — the same technology generating the noise is being used to detect it. If AI is part of your marketing toolkit, pair it with monitoring: know what the internet is saying about you while you use AI to say things about yourself.

Gudea is a startup that uses AI to help organisations spot social media crises before they erupt. It tracks who is driving online conversations, how information moves, how fast stories gain traction, and where they could be headed.
Traditional tools count mentions, hashtags and impressions. Gudea analyses behaviour, relationships and the pathways information travels across 500+ mainstream and fringe platforms, giving the context behind a spike rather than just the number.
Founded in 2023 by Keith Presley, Jonathan Sperber and James Thomin. It just raised $7M in seed funding co-led by Mudita Venture Partners and Silicon Road Ventures, bringing total funding to around $15M.
CEO Keith Presley says that in 2021, about 1 in 4 situations they examined involved inauthentic activity; now it’s roughly 9 in 10. Generative AI has dramatically lowered the cost of producing coordinated content.
Start with the free basics: Google Alerts on your business name, regular checks of review sites and social mentions, and a simple plan for how you’d respond to a false claim. Enterprise tools like Gudea exist, but the discipline matters more than the software.
The company plans narrative geolocation — identifying where conversations are happening down to the city-block level — and a feature letting customers run ad campaigns through its AI before launch to predict negative reactions.
